Abstract

In this thesis, I work on the Virtual Cycling Environment (VCE), a traffic simulation with a real bicycle as a user interface, developed to test warning systems in a safe environment. To be fully functional, vibration motors for the vibration signal are installed, as well as a brake system, to implement the brake assistant and to allow the cyclist to brake. The main part of my work focuses on developing a framework that lets the user configure a multi-staged warning system, where in each stage the signals can be configured individually with a single configuration file. This is an improvement especially for users without experience in programming. The evaluation of the trainer, which is used as speed sensor and brake system, shows that this piece of hardware is not suitable for a responsive brake system. In addition to the evaluation of the brake system, I did a small experimental study to show the functionality and usability of the framework, which has already generated in valuable feedback for future warning systems.
