This work is based on a distributed data management system which was designed and implemented especially for wireless sensor networks designed. It offers the possibility to the user to create data tables on sensor nodes and to fill them with arbitrary information like e.g. measured values. These data can be retrieved with a central PC client using SQL-like commands and be view afterwards. Up to now, data transfer was limited to single-hop communication over Bluetooth without routing abilities. In my thesis I developed the Tempest application, which extends this system with several aspects. On the one hand, I integrated the CC1000 low-power radio as an additional communication interface. In addition, I expanded the communication protocols with multi-hop data transfer support. Packet communication is handled by a gateway node, which acts as an interface between the PC client and the sensor network. Furthermore, the gateway node manages routing tables and provides this data to the PC client for further processing. A Web application offers the user the opportunity to view database nodes available in the network including their data tables and attributes. In addition, SQL-like queries can be sent to the database nodes and their result sets can be viewed. In conclusion, Tempest represents all necessary base functions for multi-hop data transfer and distributed data management in heterogeneous sensor networks.
