In my Diploma Thesis I present an 'indoor' localization system for a mobile robot with the use of a wireless sensor network. It is based on the principle of signal attenuation with increasing distance. A comparision between the statistical properties of incoming packets with those of a reference measurement facilitates the distance estimation. Once the robot has determined its distance to a set of sensor nodes with known coordinates it can calculate its position with trilateration. The main focus lies on the examination of the impact that different variing sending parameters have on the signal strength and how they can be used to increase the quality of the localization process. The results of several experiments under different circumstances are informative of a suitable parametrization from which we can expect the best possible results.
