Computer viruses and Distributed-Denial-of-Service-Attacks cause enormous damage to world economy every year. Data overflow jams communication channels and thus cuts off entire computer systems from the outside world. Precisely aimed attacks are able to block single computers and to disable their communication facilities. The early detection of such attacks within networks requires particular attention as there still is room for and need of improvements and optimisation in this field. Monitors are positioned before the systems vulnerable to attacks. These monitors are able to identify huge amounts of traffic immediately and to avert attacks by preventing data overflow of individual channels. The present paper provides a framework for the sophisticated simulation and systematic analysis of the aforesaid type of attacks by means of the simulation environment OMNeT++. Parameter variation increases the quality of interpretation by improving the readability of statistical compilations and allowing a deeper insight into the dynamics of flow. Finally, a more detailed analysis and interpretation lead to a better understanding of public networks and form the basis for the development of early-warning-systems and mechanisms of prevention of future attacks.
