A significant accomplishment in advancing the importance of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in industrial applications has been the introduction of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, since it provides guidelines after which to model the functionality of devices operating in Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR-WPAN). To study the standard, a simulation model using the simulation framework OMNeT++ and the INET framework has been implemented. Since the standard only defines the physical and MAC layer, it is important to model these layers as exactly as possible, but the INET framework offers only limited support for the lower layers of wireless protocols. Therefore this thesis describes the process of replacing the INET framework with the MiXiM framework, which offers a detailed model of the physical layer and channel. The first step has been to analyze the exact differences of the frameworks, then to replace functions where possible and reimplement them where not, always using as much of MiXiM’s functionality as possible. This was followed by the verification of the ported model, comparing it with the original version. The results show that the migration has been successful. This makes it possible to conduct new, more complex simulations especially to study the physical layer in more detail.
