Abstract
Within the scope of wildlife monitoring, the BATS research group focuses on providing new methodologies for efficient and effective monitoring of bats in their natural habitat by using Wireless Sensor Networks. Characteristics of bats, like social behavior, are collected by the sensor nodes situated on each bat, which have a weight of less than 2 gram and are especially designed for this project. Next, the collected data will be transmitted to the ground nodes for further analysis. However, the communication channel quality may vary quickly with the continuous movement of the bats and is supposed to be highly unreliable. As a very first trial, we propose forward error correction using erasure codes for improving transmission reliability and present initial results.
