Abstract

Energy is one of the most important resources of wireless sensor networks. Each packet transmission influences the energy consumption and reduces the node's lifetime. In this master thesis I propose a novel monitoring protocol which continuously monitors the available resources of the sensor nodes in the network, like for instance, spare processing capacity or residual energy, and makes them centrally available in an extremely energy efficient manner. The protocol piggybacks monitoring information onto application layer data packets and transmits all data together to the base station of the network. The presented simulation results prove the great benefit of combining multiple packets instead of forwarding them in separate transmissions. In a grid network scenario the monitoring protocol has a median energy overhead of only 0.8%. They also show that the network structure has a great impact on the energy consumption and on the protocol behavior. The proposed monitoring protocol is independent of the application layer and can be used in multiple domains for energy-efficient monitoring of the network while not influencing the actual task of the sensor network.
