In this thesis I present an overview on the functionality and especially the security threats of the Mobile IPv6 protocol. I focus particularly on redirect attacks and the methods designed to protect against them. I introduce two routing optimization protocols in detail: the current IETF proposed standard Return Routability protocol and the Deng-Zhou-Bao binding update protocol. I discuss their protection against redirect attacks. I describe the current implementation of the MIPv6 protocol in Linux environment, set up a testbed, and illustrate the functionality of the system. I implement the the Deng-Zhou-Bao protocol and present its operations step by step.
