The use of vehicle-to-x communication, i.e., the exchange of data between cars and with infrastructure, for improving driving safety and efficiency has been on the mind of researchers since decades. A huge number of research projects have since then been undertaken, which tried to make visions of intelligent transportation systems a reality and failed because of technological limitations.

With new technologies and increased computing power, the field of vehicle-to-x communication has recently seen renewed interest. This is reflected in a huge increase in publications and research projects that are becoming increasingly ambitious and more inclusive. The new-found optimism with regard to vehicle-to-x communication research can be seen expressed in the FCC's allocation of a dedicated frequency band of 75 MHz at 5.9 GHz for the sole use of vehicular short-range wireless communication.

While existing applications are predominantly relying on cellular networks, current research on vehicle-to-x communication systems is again focusing on systems employing short range radios. However, such systems inherit a number of challenges from wireless communication (e.g., error rate, interference, and collisions) and ad hoc networking (e.g., multihop routing, unidirectional links, and multi-radio multi-network operation). At the same time, they bring with them new challenges like security-related issues which need to be balanced against privacy concerns, and unique network topology dynamics.

The goal of this project is to research how to unify, and make efficient use of, short range wireless radio communication and cellular communication for vehicular networking.
