Description
The Moni-Box is an audit tool for several types of computer networks. The main area of deployment is the analysis and supervision of public available network parts. This tool cannot be compared to a firewall or something like this. It's more a tool to control and check a firewall against holes. The Moni-Box is intended to be used for creating statstics of the network usage. Nevertheless, it can be used to identify intrusions and attacks.
Currently, there is an implementation for ethernet and FDDI. Supported protocols are raw-IP, TCP, UDP and IPX.
The idea to start this project came from Eduard Beier who also watched the continuing developement of the Moni-Box. The first version of Moni-Box has been created by Bernd Flemming as his Master-Thesis at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. The next version was made by Kersten Liebl. Since that time there were a few people producing more and more stable and enhanced versions.
In 1997 a special branch of the Moni-Box was started. The goal was to allow one using the Moni-box to monitor ATM networks as well. The ATM-Moni was finished in 1998.
The last release made at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg was built by Christian Japes in 2004. This is version 3.0 of the Moni-Box.
